Make Scents with Tangent Girl….

Smells like 1995!

A conversation with friends this week led to us talking about our favourite smells and how they link to vivid memories; especially of childhood, or teenage years.

Inspired by this, I’m developing a series of podcasts around a the senses and good memories we associate with them. I’m starting with smells, but will be expanding to the other senses too if there’s enough interest and I feel the format works well.

There’s lots of science around the idea that some senses provoke more vivid memories or provoke memories more quickly. One that always seems to be at the top is definitely our sense of smell. Of course I realise that not all smells and memories are good ones, but for the purposes of this podcast series I will only be focusing on the positive ones.

My hope is that the series will follow the format that; I pick a sense, a creative or nostalgic prompt, then share my own memories and experiences on that. Then I want to reach out to friends, family and as wide a variety of ages and backgrounds as I can find, to share their memories and experiences in the same format.

I envision that the format per episode will be:

1. Introduce the sensory prompt (e.g. Make Scents with TG)
2. Choose top vivid scents associated happy/funny/interesting memories.
3. Share a little science or interesting info about what was shared.

So for each senses prompt, episode 1 will be my own experiences and memories, with a few follow up episodes for the same prompt, shared by other people. I hope to be able to speak to a range of people in terms of ages, backgrounds and experiences, as this is such a fun and light hearted way to get a glimpse of a persons life experiences and trinkets of social history we might not otherwise have heard, all rolled into one!
